Description

The Atria Residence design breaks the physical conventions of the townhouse typology. Individual unit footprints extrude vertically over three stories, as is typical in this project type; however, internal portions of the ensuing building volume are removed to create exterior terraces. This approach contrasts with the conventional Denver townhouse model that positions outdoor space on top of the building, and puts them lower in the structure to create a dialogue with the streetscape. The resulting plan offers outdoor decks with direct adjacencies to the building interior and views to the downtown skyline. This also brings contrast to a neighborhood dominated by doghouse-scaled stair enclosures accessing seldom used rooftop decks.

Each residence includes a south-facing two-story solarium, providing an abundance

of natural light exposure.  The varied facade of the project adds interest to the streetscape. Grade-level entries are positioned in an exterior colonnade providing separation between the pedestrian traffic and abutting living space while also integrating the project at street level.

The project introduces a palette of tactile and authentic exterior materials. The stainless steel panels were procured by Meridian 105 from a local sheet metal fabricator’s salvage stock.  The rustic and imperfect quality of the material contributes to the character of the building and reflects the design team’s sustainable approach to building development.  Cedar siding wraps the colonnade and is treated with a pine tar finish, chosen for its semi-transparent and long-term preservation qualities.
