The City Hotel, Castle Rock
Historic Renovation + Addition, Hotel, Restaurant, Retail, Mixed-use
Castle Rock, Co (in-progress) : 36,000 sq ft Architect of Record, Interior Design
Project Overview
This project is the revitalization of Castle Rock's oldest structure—the historic 1870s City Hotel—combined with a 33-room, four-story boutique hotel addition on a compact, shared site. Currently in permitting and preliminary construction, the completed project will be a centerpiece for the town, featuring rooms, a lobby, bar, retail, and top-floor public hospitality spaces.
-
Historic Context & Compact Density
The project revitalizes the town's original 1870s City Hotel, which sat deteriorated for years, while maximizing the site's economic potential. The core challenge was to integrate a four-story, modern boutique hotel addition onto a compact urban lot in a strategically proportioned design that honors and remains complementary to the low-scale, historic structure. This required a rigorous design strategy to safely fit new hotel, restaurant, and public amenity uses onto the site.

-
Contextual Scale and Material Integrity
Meridian 105 employed a highly contextual approach to ensure the new density respects the historical scale of the original hotel. The design achieves this through strategically proportioned volumes that avoid overwhelming the existing structure. We used wood siding to clad the new four-story addition, honoring the original building’s materiality and creating an authentic, complementary aesthetic that blends the two centuries of architecture. The project's viability is driven by the strategic combination of hotel rooms, multiple restaurants, and valuable outdoor amenity spaces.

-
Civil Centerpiece
The completed City Hotel will transform a long-deteriorated landmark into a central economic and civic centerpiece for the Town of Castle Rock. By successfully integrating the new boutique hotel, which features multiple levels of hospitality and public-facing amenities, the project pays homage to the town's history while creating a high-performing, multi-revenue asset designed for long-term market viability and community draw.
