Process

From Discovery to Legacy, the journey of building a custom home should be as inspiring as the final residence. Our process is intentionally unique and tailored to your specific goals, merging the efficiency of a rigorous four-phase roadmap with a high degree of flexibility. We have refined this journey to remove complexity, placing uncompromising design discipline at the forefront, and ensuring you have the clarity and peace of mind to simply enjoy the experience of watching your vision come to life.

Phase 1: Discovery & Alignment

Focus: Building the relationship and understanding the vision

Our process begins with a conversation—a phone call or in-person meeting where both our team and the prospective client have the opportunity to get to know each other. We want to understand the project, the personality of the people behind it, and whether the relationship feels like the right fit.

If the alignment is strong, we move to an initial site visit. Whenever possible, we walk the property with the client to understand what they love about the land, what they see as opportunities, and how they imagine living there. For out-of-town projects, we often visit local permitting and zoning offices to understand the regulatory landscape early.

Before any design work begins, we invest time in listening, learning, and helping the client articulate their goals—whether that’s defining the program, clarifying lifestyle needs, or understanding family dynamics (even something as simple as how many grandkids visit can shape kitchen planning and dining space). This creates the foundation for a meaningful design partnership.

Phase 2: Site Strategy & Early Concept Exploration

Focus: Testing possibilities and setting the project’s direction

Once a preliminary service agreement is in place, we begin studying the site. We explore multiple layout options that respond to the land’s natural qualities—light, views, privacy, access, topography—and the client’s goals. These early studies are intentionally simple and diagrammatic, giving us and the client room to explore ideas without premature commitments.

As the direction becomes clearer, we shift into 3D massing studies. Here we evaluate building form, height, square footage, view corridors, natural light, and broad program relationships. This is where the project’s architectural identity begins to emerge.

Phase 3: Design Development & Material Exploration

Goal: Shape architecture through detail, craft, and collaboration

With a clear direction established, we move into deeper design. Floor plans evolve, interior relationships are refined, and we begin detailed studies of materials, assemblies, and architectural character. Materiality is central to our work. We research precedents, explore new technologies, and experiment with how materials can elevate the experience of the home.

During this phase, many clients choose to engage a builder. We collaborate closely with both client and builder on constructability, pricing, and technical considerations. Throughout, we maintain a structured and enjoyable decision-making process: we guide the design, narrow options, present clear recommendations, and ensure the client always feels informed and excited about the emerging home.

Phase 4: Documentation, Permitting & Construction Partnership

Goal: Translating design into reality with steady, hand-on guidance

As the design solidifies, we develop the detailed drawings required for pricing, permitting, and construction.

We remain fully involved throughout construction, partnering closely with the builder, visiting the site, reviewing technical solutions, answering questions, and ensuring the architectural integrity of the design is carried through to completion. Our goal is to make the journey smooth, engaging, and enjoyable—guided by respect, clarity, and a shared commitment to excellence.
